Ironically, Canadian pet insurance works extremely similar to pet insurance that can be purchased in the USA and the UL. One of the main difference is that it is nearly impossible to purchase a policy on any animal that would be considered an exotic pet. For owners of cats and dogs, Canadian pet insurance offers a number of policies like those in the US. Just like in the US, the number of animals that are insuring their pet is increasing at a staggering pace.
There are basically two different kinds of pet insurance companies that you will find in Canada. The first is basically a company that acts as a broker for a larger underwiter. These brokers will help you decide what you are looking for and what types of options would best suit your needs and will then find you a matching policy. One thing to remember with these broker type pet insurance companies is that they will usually offer policies that are less than desirable. The second is like those companies that we write about on this site. The basically offer packages that are designed with the pet owner in mind. I highly recommend not using a broker type company when purchasing your pet insurance.
It doesn’t matter which type of company you are talking about, the Canadian pet insurance market is growing at an increasingly rapid rate. Just like in the American industry there are companies that will come and go. It is important that you do some research and find the companies that you feel most comfortable with.
