As many of you know, pet insurance has been around for a number of years and is now an established industry.  The reason for the increasing popularity and necessissity for this type of coverage is that routine vet visits and pet medications have steadily risen.  The amount of money it now costs to take care of animal is enormous.  This is especially true for cat owners.  Cats typically live long lives, but as they age, they tend to suffer from many health problems such as arthritis, kidney disorders and even cancer.  In order to ease the financial burden that taking care of your cat’s health requires many owners are choosing to have their cat covered with cat health insurance.

There are some factors that you will need to consider when choosing a policy underwriting for a cat health insurance policy.  You will want to make sure that you get one that financially covers for you for all of the situations that you may need as well as a few extras just for some peace of mind.

Does Your Vet Accept Cat Health Insurance?

Before you purchase any policy for your cat’s health coverage make sure that you verify that your vet accepts it.  A good idea would be to call your vet and ask them what policies they accept and which they would recommend for your needs.

Exclusions, Caps and Deductibles

Most cat health insurance policies will contain clauses that will exclude pre-existing conditions from being covered for benefits under the policy. There may be other exclusions such as, flea control, heartworm medication, spay or neutering and vaccinations.  Each insurance company will be a little different.  Some will even offer policies that cover the above mentions exclusions.

The rules regarding co-pays and deductibles will be different for each company as well.  These rules will be clearly stated on any quotes that you receive.  Some companies will require a flat maximum deductible and others will have a percentage of the total charges that you will be responsible for.

Other Things to Consider

Cat health insurance will usually carry riders with them.  These riders are basically add-ons that you can choose that will cover a variety of miscellaneous expenses like preventative care and dental care.  Please make sure that you fully understand and are comfortable with any policy that you decide to choose.
